You are first in my thoughts
Written probably around 144-145 CE, when Marcus was twenty-three or twenty-four years old.
I did not write you in the morning because I heard you were better, and I was busy with other business. I can’t bear to write to you at all unless my mind is clear, at ease and free. Therefore, if the news is correct, please assure me of that. You know what I want and how I deserve it.
Goodbye, my master, you are so rightly first in my thoughts, before all others, on all occasions. See, my master, I’m not sleepy and yet I force myself to sleep so you don’t get angry. In any case, you realize that I am writing this in the evening.
